Bedroom Dresser Buying Guide: Size Tips
Standard Dresser Dimensions
A standard dresser is 60 inches wide, 20 inches deep, and 30–34 inches tall. A tallboy (vertical chest) is 36–40 inches wide and 50–60 inches tall. Choose based on your wall space: horizontal dressers need wide walls, vertical units suit narrow spaces.
Drawer Count and Configuration
Six-drawer dressers (3 columns × 2 rows or 2 columns × 3 rows) offer the most versatile storage. Look for full-extension drawer slides—the drawer comes out completely, giving access to items at the back. Soft-close mechanisms prevent slamming and extend hardware life.
Material and Construction
- Solid wood (oak, maple, walnut): lifetime durability, $500–$2,000
- Engineered wood with veneer: good look at 40% the cost, 10–15 year lifespan
- MDF with laminate: budget option, $150–$400, 5–10 year lifespan
Wall Anchoring
All dressers over 30 inches tall must be anchored to the wall. Tip-over accidents cause serious injuries, especially to children. Most dressers include anti-tip hardware—use it. Installation takes 15 minutes with a stud finder and screws.
Mirror Pairing
Most dressers pair with a matching mirror (sold separately). The mirror should be 70–80% the dresser width. Hang it 4–6 inches above the dresser top. Center it horizontally for a balanced look.
