Bedroom Lighting Layers for Better Sleep
The Science of Sleep-Friendly Lighting
Your bedroom lighting directly affects melatonin production. Harsh, blue-toned light before bed suppresses melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep. Layered lighting gives you control over intensity and color temperature throughout the evening.
The Three Layers
- Ambient (general) lighting: A dimmable ceiling fixture or flush mount provides overall illumination for dressing and cleaning. Aim for 2700K warm white.
- Task lighting: Bedside lamps or wall-mounted sconces for reading. Choose fixtures with focused, downward light that won't disturb a partner.
- Accent lighting: LED strips behind a headboard or inside a wardrobe add soft glow without eye strain. Smart bulbs that shift from warm to cool throughout the day mimic natural light patterns.
Fixture Placement Tips
Position reading lights at shoulder height when seated in bed. Avoid overhead fixtures directly above the pillow — they create glare when you're lying down. Consider a dimmer switch on every fixture so you can wind down gradually.
Smart Lighting for Sleep Hygiene
Programmable smart bulbs (Philips Hue, LIFX) can automatically dim and shift to warm amber tones 90 minutes before your bedtime. This gradual transition signals your brain to begin producing melatonin.
