Nightstand Height: How to Match Your Bed Frame
The Golden Rule of Nightstand Height
Your nightstand surface should be level with or 2 to 3 inches below the top of your mattress. This height lets you reach for a glass of water or phone without straining up or down.
Common Mattress Heights and Matching Nightstands
- Platform bed (18 inches total): Nightstand 22 to 24 inches tall
- Standard bed with box spring (25 inches): Nightstand 24 to 26 inches tall
- Tall bed with pillow-top (28 to 30 inches): Nightstand 26 to 28 inches tall
- Low Japanese-style bed (14 inches): Nightstand 16 to 18 inches tall
Width and Depth Considerations
A nightstand should be 20 to 28 inches wide for most bedrooms. Leave at least 3 inches between the nightstand and the bed frame. Depth of 15 to 18 inches works for most rooms, but measure your wall space to confirm the nightstand won't block closet doors or walkways.
Storage Options
Drawers hide clutter but limit surface area. Open shelves display books and decor but show dust. A combination (one drawer plus one open shelf) offers the best of both. If you need charging ports, look for built-in USB outlets on the back panel.
Style Matching
Nightstands don't have to match the bed frame exactly, but they should share a design language. A mid-century walnut bed pairs with tapered-leg walnut nightstands. An upholstered bed works with lacquered or fabric-wrapped nightstands.
