Platform Bed vs Box Spring: Which to Choose

By Rachel Kim ·

Understanding the Two Options

A platform bed has a solid or slatted base built into the frame, so it supports the mattress directly without a box spring. A traditional bed frame requires a separate box spring — a fabric-covered wooden frame with springs or a solid foundation — between the frame and mattress.

Cost Comparison

Platform beds typically cost more upfront ($300-$800 for a quality queen frame) but eliminate the need for a box spring ($150-$300). A traditional frame ($150-$400) plus box spring ends up in a similar price range. Over time, platform beds are slightly cheaper because there is no box spring to replace every 8-10 years.

Mattress Compatibility

Memory Foam and Latex

These mattresses work best on platform beds with solid or closely-spaced slats (no more than 3 inches apart). A box spring is unnecessary and can actually void the warranty on some foam mattresses.

Innerspring

Traditional innerspring mattresses are designed to pair with a box spring. The box spring adds height and some additional give. However, many modern innerspring models now work on platform beds too — check the manufacturer specifications.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses (coils plus foam) are versatile and work on both. Just ensure slat spacing meets the mattress warranty requirements.

Height and Accessibility

Platform beds sit lower (12-18 inches from floor to top of frame). Box spring setups sit higher (22-30 inches). If you have mobility concerns, the higher setup is easier to get in and out of. If you prefer a low, modern aesthetic, go platform.

Storage

Many platform beds include built-in drawers or under-bed storage space. Box spring setups rarely offer this because the box spring fills the frame. If bedroom storage is a priority, a platform bed with drawers is a strong choice.

The Verdict

Choose a platform bed if you have a foam, latex, or hybrid mattress and want a modern, low-profile look with storage. Choose a box spring setup if you prefer a higher bed or have a traditional innerspring mattress.
