Buffet Cabinets for Small Dining Rooms
Why a Buffet in a Small Room
A buffet cabinet provides storage for tableware, linens, and serving dishes while doubling as a serving surface during meals. In a small dining room, the challenge is finding a buffet that does not crowd the space.
Slim-Profile Buffets
Look for buffets that are 12-15 inches deep (instead of the standard 18-20 inches). A slim buffet against the wall takes up minimal floor space while providing meaningful storage. The top surface still accommodates serving dishes, a coffee station, or decorative items.
Console Table Alternative
A console table (typically 10-12 inches deep) can serve as a buffet in the tightest spaces. Add baskets or bins underneath for extra storage. Console tables are also lighter and easier to move if you rearrange the room.
Wall-Mounted Options
Floating shelves or a wall-mounted cabinet eliminates the floor footprint entirely. Install two or three shelves at buffet height (34-38 inches from the floor) and use the wall space for display. This works especially well in rooms with limited wall length.
Corner Buffets
A triangular or L-shaped corner buffet fits into dead corner space. These are harder to find commercially but can be custom-built or assembled from two matching narrow pieces placed at a right angle.
Multi-Function Pieces
- A buffet with a wine rack built in saves buying a separate wine storage unit
- A buffet with a hutch or open shelving above provides display space for dishes and decor
- A rolling bar cart can serve as a movable buffet during parties and tuck away when not needed
Visual Tips
Choose a buffet in a lighter color or with open legs (rather than a solid base) to keep the room feeling airy. A mirror above the buffet reflects light and creates the illusion of more space.
