Dining Room Chandelier Height: A Simple Formula

Dining Room Chandelier Height: A Simple Formula

The 30 to 36 Inch Rule

The bottom of your chandelier should hang 30 to 36 inches above the table surface. This puts the fixture at eye level for seated diners — close enough to illuminate the table, high enough to see across at conversation partners.

Adjust for Ceiling Height

The 30 to 36 inch rule assumes 8-foot ceilings. For higher ceilings, add 3 inches of chain for every additional foot of ceiling height:

Fixture Size Proportions

Your chandelier should be one-half to two-thirds the width of your dining table. A 48-inch table needs a 24 to 32-inch fixture. A 72-inch table needs a 36 to 48-inch fixture. Too small looks lost; too large overwhelms the table.

Brightness and Bulb Selection

Dining chandeliers should provide 3,000 to 4,000 total lumens for an 8-seat table. Use dimmable LED bulbs (2700K warm white) to adjust from bright mealtime lighting to soft ambient glow for entertaining. Install a dimmer switch — it is the single best upgrade for dining room ambiance.

Common Mistakes

Hanging too high is the most common error. The fixture should feel intimate, not distant. Also avoid chandeliers with uplight-only designs — you need downlight to illuminate the table surface and people's faces.
