Dining Room Chandelier Height Rules

Dining Room Chandelier Height Rules

By James Thornton ·

The 30-Inch Rule

The bottom of your chandelier should hang 30-36 inches above the table surface for standard 8-foot ceilings. For each additional foot of ceiling height, add 3 inches.

Sizing Your Chandelier

Width Rule

The chandelier should be one-half to two-thirds the width of your dining table. For a 48-inch-wide table, choose a fixture 24-32 inches in diameter.

Length Rule

For rectangular tables, the chandelier length should be about one-third the table length. A 72-inch table works with a 24-inch-long fixture.

Multiple Fixtures

For tables longer than 8 feet, consider two smaller chandeliers instead of one large one. Space them evenly, with each centered over one-third of the table.

Light Output

Aim for 200-400 lumens total for intimate dining. Install a dimmer switch to adjust for different occasions — bright for homework, dim for dinner parties.

Installation Safety

Chandeliers over 50 pounds need a rated junction box, not just the standard ceiling box. Have an electrician verify the box rating before hanging a heavy fixture.
