Chandelier Height Formula

Hang 30–36 inches above the tabletop for 8-foot ceilings. Add 3 inches per additional foot of ceiling. This puts the fixture at seated eye level—close enough to illuminate food, high enough for sight lines.

Fixture Sizing

Diameter should be one-half to two-thirds the table width. For a 42-inch table, choose 21–28 inches. For round tables, match two-thirds the diameter.

Alternatives

Dimmer and Color

Install a dimmer for versatility—full brightness for work, 30% for intimate dinners. Use warm white bulbs (2700K) to enhance food colors. Avoid cool white (4000K+) which makes food look unappetizing.

Layering

Combine overhead fixture with wall sconces or buffet lamps for layered lighting. This eliminates harsh shadows and creates depth in the room.
