Dining Pendant Light Height Guide
The Standard Rule
Hang pendant lights 30-36 inches above the tabletop for standard 8-foot ceilings. This provides task lighting without blocking sightlines across the table.
Adjusting for Ceiling Height
For every additional foot of ceiling height, add 3 inches to the hanging height. A 10-foot ceiling? Hang at 36-42 inches above the table. Vaulted ceilings may need adjustable cords.
Multiple Pendants
- Odd numbers: 3 pendants look more natural than 2 or 4
- Spacing: 24-30 inches apart, centered over the table
- Size: Total width of all pendants should be 2/3 of table length
Brightness Guide
Aim for 40-50 lumens per square foot of table surface. For a 6-person table (roughly 3x6 ft), that's 720-1080 lumens total. Dimmable fixtures are essential.
