Dining Room Rug Sizing and Placement
The Pull-Out Rule for Dining Rugs
Your rug must extend beyond the table on all sides — enough that chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out. Add 24-30 inches to each side of the table dimensions.
Sizing Formula
Take your table dimensions and add 48-60 inches to both length and width. A 72×36 inch table needs a rug at least 120×84 inches (10×7 feet). For a round table, add 48-60 inches to the diameter.
Shape Matching
- Rectangular table: Rectangular rug. The rug shape should echo the table shape.
- Round table: Round or square rug. A square rug under a round table creates visual interest.
- Oval table: Rectangular or oval rug. Avoid round rugs — the proportions clash.
Best Materials for Dining
Dining rooms are spill zones. Choose stain-resistant materials: wool (naturally repels liquids), polypropylene (synthetic, easy to clean), or flatweave cotton (machine washable). Avoid high-pile rugs — chairs drag and catch on them. Low-pile or flatweave lets chairs slide smoothly.
