Dining Table Seating Capacity Guide
How Much Space Does Each Diner Need
Comfortable dining requires 24 inches of width per person and 12-15 inches of depth from the table edge. These measurements ensure elbows don't bump and plates fit without crowding.
Seating by Table Shape and Size
- 36-inch round: 4 people (cozy)
- 42-inch round: 4-5 people
- 48-inch round: 6 people
- 60-inch rectangular (36" wide): 6 people
- 72-inch rectangular: 8 people
- 84-inch rectangular: 8-10 people
- 96-inch rectangular: 10 people
Extension Leaves
Tables with leaves offer flexibility. A butterfly leaf stores under the tabletop and extends 18-24 inches, adding 2-4 seats. Drop-leaf tables fold down for daily use and extend for guests.
Bench Seating
A bench on one side fits more people than individual chairs (about 15 inches per person vs. 24). Ideal for families with children. Pair chairs on one side with a bench on the other for a casual, space-efficient layout.
