Dining Table Seating: How Many Chairs Fit?

Dining Table Seating: How Many Chairs Fit?

The Per-Person Rule

Each diner needs 24 inches of table edge width and 12 inches of depth. This is the minimum for comfortable elbow room and plate space. For formal settings with multiple glasses and courses, increase to 28-30 inches per person.

Leg Placement Matters

Tables with corner legs limit seating because chair legs collide with table legs. Pedestal bases and trestle bases allow chairs to slide in anywhere along the edge, maximizing seating capacity. If buying a new table and seating flexibility matters, choose a pedestal.

Chair Width Check

Measure your chair at its widest point (usually the seat or armrests). Armchairs need 26-28 inches each; armless side chairs need 20-24 inches. If your chairs are wider than 22 inches, reduce the per-side count by one.

End Seating Reality

End seats are the least comfortable position at a rectangular table. The diner faces the table length and has less leg room. For everyday use, skip end seats. Reserve them for holiday gatherings when maximum capacity matters.
