By Ryan Tanaka ·

Level 1: Everyday Casual

Plate, fork (left), knife and spoon (right), water glass (above knife). Napkin on the plate or to the left.

Level 2: Elevated Casual

Add a salad plate on top of the dinner plate, a wine glass beside the water glass, and a cloth napkin.

Level 3: Semi-Formal

Include a charger plate, soup bowl on a saucer, bread plate with butter knife (top left), and two glasses (water + wine).

Level 4: Formal

Add a dessert spoon and fork above the plate, a second wine glass (white + red), and a place card.

Level 5: Black-Tie

Full flatware (oyster fork, fish knife), multiple wine glasses in a diagonal line, menu card, and finger bowl with lemon.

Key Tip

Work from the outside in. Utensils used first are placed farthest from the plate.
