Area Rug Sizing for Living Rooms: A Guide
The Most Common Mistake
Undersized rugs make rooms feel disjointed and cheap. The golden rule: your rug should be large enough that all front legs of major furniture pieces rest on it.
Standard Sizes and When to Use Them
- 5x8 ft: Small living rooms, furniture against one wall only
- 8x10 ft: Most living rooms, front legs of sofa and chairs on rug
- 9x12 ft: Large rooms, all furniture legs on rug
- 10x14 ft: Open-plan spaces anchoring multiple seating areas
Placement Rules
Leave 12-18 inches of bare floor between rug edges and walls. In open plans, the rug should define the seating area, extending 6+ inches beyond the sofa on each side.
Layering Tip
Layer a smaller patterned rug over a larger neutral one (like jute) for visual interest while maintaining proper coverage.
