Living Room Curtains: Length and Hang Guide
The Height Illusion
Hang curtain rods 4–6 inches above the window frame—or at the ceiling line if the gap is under 12 inches. This draws the eye upward and makes ceilings appear taller. Most people mount rods directly above the window, which makes the room feel lower and more cramped.
Length Options
Floor-Length (Standard)
Curtains should just kiss the floor or pool slightly (1–2 inches). Measure from the rod to the floor and subtract 1/2 inch for a clean break. Floor-length curtains suit living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms.
Puddling (Formal)
Allow 3–8 inches of fabric to pool on the floor. Creates a luxurious, romantic look. Requires more fabric and regular adjustment. Best in formal living rooms with minimal foot traffic.
Above the Floor (Casual)
Hang curtains 1/2 to 1 inch above the floor. Easier to vacuum under, no dust collection. Suits high-traffic family rooms and homes with pets.
Width Rule
Curtain panels should be 1.5 to 2 times the window width for fullness when closed. For a 48-inch window, use two panels that are 36–48 inches wide each. Wider panels create more luxurious folds and better light blocking.
Rod Extension
Extend the rod 4–10 inches beyond the window frame on each side. This allows curtains to stack completely off the glass when open, maximizing natural light and making windows appear wider.
