Living Room Rug Size Guide 2026
Why Rug Size Matters
A correctly sized rug anchors your furniture and defines the conversation area. Too small and the room feels fragmented; too large and it overwhelms the space.
The Three Placement Rules
All Legs On
Ideal for large rooms. All furniture legs sit on the rug, creating a unified, luxurious feel. Requires a large rug (9x12 or bigger).
Front Legs On
The most versatile option. Front legs of sofas and chairs rest on the rug while back legs are off. Works with 8x10 rugs in most standard living rooms.
All Legs Off
Only the coffee table sits on the rug. Use this for small rooms or when the rug is a statement piece. Minimum 5x8 size.
Room Size Recommendations
- Small room (under 200 sq ft): 5x7 or 6x9
- Medium room (200-350 sq ft): 8x10
- Large room (350+ sq ft): 9x12 or custom
Common Mistakes
The most common error is buying a rug that is too small. The rug should extend at least 6 inches beyond each side of the sofa. Always measure before ordering.
