Throw Pillows: Mixing Patterns and Sizes

Throw Pillows: Mixing Patterns and Sizes

By Olivia Parker ·

The Rule of Three

For a standard sofa, use 3–5 throw pillows in odd numbers. Odd groupings feel more natural and dynamic than even pairs. Mix sizes, patterns, and textures for visual interest without chaos.

Size Combinations

Start with two 20–22 inch square pillows in the corners. Add one or two 18-inch pillows in front. Finish with one lumbar pillow (12×20 inches) for variety. This creates depth and layering that uniform sizing cannot achieve.

Pattern Mixing Formula

Scale Variation

Combine one large-scale pattern (wide stripes, oversized florals), one medium-scale (geometric, medium florals), and one small-scale (tiny dots, micro-checks, solids). Different scales prevent patterns from competing visually.

Color Connection

All pillows should share at least one color. This creates cohesion even when patterns differ wildly. Pull one color from a rug, artwork, or the sofa itself to anchor the arrangement.

Practical Tips

Use inserts 2 inches larger than the cover for a full, plump look (a 20-inch cover with a 22-inch insert). Zippered covers allow seasonal swaps. Store off-season covers flat in a labeled bin—never folded, which creates permanent creases.
