TV Stand Sizing: How to Pick the Right Width
The Width Rule
Your TV stand should be at least 3 inches wider than your TV on each side. This prevents the TV from looking like it might slide off and provides visual breathing room. For a 65-inch TV (about 57 inches wide), choose a stand at least 63 inches wide.
Height: Eye Level Matters
The center of your TV screen should be at eye level when seated, typically 42 inches from the floor. Subtract half your TV height from 42 to find the ideal stand height. For a 65-inch TV (about 32 inches tall), the stand surface should be around 26 inches high.
Depth Considerations
- Soundbar space: If you use a soundbar, ensure the stand has at least 4 inches of depth in front of the TV base
- Media components: Gaming consoles, streaming boxes, and receivers need ventilated shelves. Measure your largest component and add 2 inches
- Cable management: Look for stands with rear cable ports or open backs for easy wire routing
Stand Types by Room Size
Small Rooms: Corner TV Stand
Triangular corner stands use dead space efficiently. They typically hold TVs up to 55 inches and offer limited but adequate storage.
Medium Rooms: Console Table Style
Open-frame console stands (metal legs, wood top) look light and modern. They work well in rooms where you want to see through the furniture rather than have a heavy visual block.
Large Rooms: Entertainment Center
Full-width media consoles with cabinets and shelves anchor large walls. Pair with floating shelves above for additional display space.
