Home Office Cable Management: Clean Desk Setup
The Problem With Cable Clutter
Exposed cables under your desk create visual chaos, collect dust, and make it difficult to clean or move equipment. A proper cable management system takes about an hour to set up and transforms your workspace.
Under-Desk Cable Tray
Mount a wire mesh cable tray under your desk to hold power strips, adapters, and excess cable length. The tray keeps everything off the floor and accessible. Choose a tray that spans at least 60% of your desk width.
Essential Tools
- Cable tray or raceway: Holds cables under desk
- Velcro cable ties: Bundle related cables together
- Cable sleeve: Wraps multiple cables into one clean line
- Desk grommet: Routes cables through the desk surface
- Adhesive cable clips: Guide cables along desk edges
Cable Routing Strategy
Group cables by destination: monitor cables together, USB cables together, power cables together. Run each group through separate sleeves or channels. Label both ends of each cable for easy identification during troubleshooting.
Monitor Arm Integration
If you use monitor arms, route cables through the arm channels. Most quality arms have built-in cable routing. This eliminates the visible cable droop that comes with monitor stands.
Power Strip Placement
Mount your power strip to the underside of the desk or inside the cable tray. Use a strip with widely spaced outlets to accommodate bulky adapter plugs. A strip with surge protection adds safety.
