Home Office Desk Depth Guide

Standard Desk Depths

Office desks range from 20 to 36 inches deep. The right depth depends on your monitor distance, peripherals, and available room space.

Depth by Monitor Size

24 inches: Laptop-Only Setup

Adequate for a laptop with external keyboard and mouse. Too shallow for a desktop monitor at proper viewing distance.

30 inches: Single Monitor

The most popular size. Fits a 24-27 inch monitor at arm-length distance with room for keyboard and notepad.

36 inches: Dual Monitor or Ultrawide

Necessary for dual 27-inch monitors or a 34-inch ultrawide. Also ideal if you spread out documents or use a drawing tablet.

Room Size Considerations

Allow at least 36 inches behind the desk for chair movement. In a 10x10 room, a 30-inch-deep desk leaves comfortable clearance. In tighter spaces, consider a wall-mounted floating desk.

Ergonomic Check

Your monitor should be an arm-length away (20-30 inches from eyes). If your desk is too shallow, use a monitor arm to push the screen back. If too deep, add a keyboard tray to bring typing closer.
