Home Office Lighting for Video Calls
Key Light (Main Source)
Place your main light source in front of you, slightly above eye level, angled down at 30-45 degrees. A ring light ($25-$60) or LED panel ($40-$100) positioned behind your monitor provides even, flattering illumination.
Fill Light
A softer light on the opposite side reduces shadows. This can be a second LED panel at 50% brightness or light bounced off a white wall. The goal is to reduce contrast, not eliminate shadows entirely.
Backlight (Separation)
A light behind you or to the side separates you from the background. A small LED strip or lamp behind your chair adds depth to the image. Without backlight, you appear flat and one-dimensional.
Common Mistakes
- Window behind you: creates silhouette effect, face too dark
- Overhead only: harsh shadows under eyes and chin
- Mixed color temperatures: face looks orange, background blue
- No diffusion: bare bulbs create harsh, unflattering light
Budget Setup
A single ring light ($30) positioned behind your laptop eliminates 80% of lighting problems. Add a desk lamp bounced off a white wall for fill. Total cost under $50.
