Office Chair Lumbar Support Explained
Why Lumbar Matters
The lower spine curves inward (lordosis). Without support, this curve flattens during sitting, causing disc pressure and muscle fatigue.
Fixed Lumbar
A molded curve in the backrest. Works if it matches your spine exactly. Common in budget chairs ($150-300).
Adjustable Lumbar
Height and depth sliders let you position the support. Found in mid-range chairs ($300-600). Takes trial and error to dial in.
Dynamic Lumbar
Flexible mesh or spring-loaded pads that move with you. Premium chairs ($600+) use this. Least effort to set up correctly.
Quick Test
Sit in the chair for 15 minutes. If you shift position frequently or feel pressure in your lower back, the lumbar support is not aligned with your natural curve.
