Garden Bench Placement: Create Outdoor Retreats

By Liam Foster ·

Placement Is Everything

A garden bench transforms an ordinary outdoor space into a retreat. But placement determines whether it becomes a beloved sitting spot or an overlooked piece of furniture. Consider views, shade, and accessibility.

Focal Point Strategy

Position the bench where it frames a garden view or serves as a destination at the end of a path. The bench should feel like a natural stopping point, drawing people deeper into the garden.

Ideal Locations

Shade and Sun Patterns

Observe your garden throughout the day before committing to placement. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal for most climates. In hot regions, prioritize afternoon shade. Remember that shade patterns change seasonally as the sun angle shifts.

Traffic Flow

Place benches off main walkways but within easy reach. A bench should be 2-3 feet from the nearest path, allowing people to step off and sit without blocking foot traffic. Ensure at least 3 feet of clear path in front of the bench.

Ground Surface

Set the bench on a level, stable surface. Gravel, flagstone, or a small concrete pad prevent sinking and mud. Avoid placing directly on grass, which dies under the bench and creates maintenance issues.
