Outdoor Dining Sets: Size Guide for 4 to 12 Seats
Table Size by Seat Count
The right table size gives each person 24 inches of width and allows chairs to pull out without hitting the patio edge.
- 4 seats: 36x36 inch square or 48x30 inch rectangle
- 6 seats: 60x36 inch rectangle or 48-inch round
- 8 seats: 84x36 inch rectangle or 60-inch round
- 10 seats: 96x42 inch rectangle
- 12 seats: 120x42 inch rectangle or two 6-seat tables pushed together
Patio Space Requirements
Add 30 inches on all sides of the table for chair clearance. A 6-seat table (60x36 inches) needs a patio area of at least 10x8 feet. For 8 seats, you need at least 12x8 feet.
Material Considerations
Aluminum and teak are the best outdoor dining materials. Aluminum is lightweight and rust-proof. Teak is heavy and naturally weather-resistant. Avoid glass tops for outdoor dining — they show water spots and can crack in temperature extremes.
Extendable Tables
Extendable tables add a leaf for extra seats when needed. A 6-seat table with a leaf extends to 8 seats. Look for self-storing leaves that slide under the tabletop when not in use. They cost 20 to 30 percent more than fixed tables but offer flexibility.
Chair Selection
Outdoor dining chairs should be stackable for easy storage and made from the same material as the table for a cohesive look. Sling-style chairs dry fastest after rain. Cushioned chairs are more comfortable but require cushion storage during storms.
