Outdoor Dining Sets: Size Guide for Any Patio

Measure Your Patio First

Before shopping, measure the usable patio area (excluding grill stations, planters, and pathways). You need at least 36 inches of clearance around the table on all sides for chairs to pull out and people to walk behind seated diners.

Set Sizes by Patio Area

Small Patio (8x8 feet or less): 2-4 Person Set

A 30-inch bistro table with two chairs fits a 6x6 space. For four people, a 36-inch square table with armless chairs works in an 8x8 area. Avoid armchairs; they add 4-6 inches per seat.

Medium Patio (10x12 feet): 4-6 Person Set

A 48-inch round or 60-inch rectangular table seats 4-6 comfortably. Add a bench on one side of a rectangular table to squeeze in two more people without adding chairs.

Large Patio (12x16 feet or more): 6-8 Person Set

A 72-84 inch rectangular table or 60-inch round table seats 6-8. Consider an extension table that starts at 6 and extends to 8-10 for flexible entertaining.

Shape Guide

Umbrella Hole Check

If you plan to use a table umbrella, confirm the table has a center hole (most do). Offset umbrellas work with any table shape but need a heavy base (50+ lbs) for stability.
