Outdoor Kitchen: Furniture Layout Guide
Work Triangle Principle
Apply the kitchen work triangle outdoors: grill (cooking), prep counter, and sink/storage should form a triangle with 4–9 feet between each point. This minimizes steps and maximizes efficiency during cooking and entertaining.
Seating Zones
Bar Seating
A counter-height bar (36 inches) with stools lets guests watch the cook and converse. Allow 24 inches of counter width per stool. A 6-foot counter seats 3 comfortably. Choose swivel stools with backs for comfort during long gatherings.
Dining Area
Place the dining table 8–12 feet from the grill—close enough for easy serving, far enough to avoid smoke and heat. Allow 36 inches of clearance around the table for chair movement and traffic flow.
Lounge Area
Position lounge seating 12–15 feet from the cooking area. Guests who are not eating can relax without being in the work zone. An outdoor sofa or deep-seating chairs with a coffee table creates a separate conversation area.
Weather Protection
- Pergola or roof over the cooking area: protects from rain and sun
- Windbreak: lattice, hedge, or fence on the prevailing wind side
- Shade structures over dining: umbrellas, shade sails, or retractable awnings
Material Selection
All furniture near the grill must be heat-resistant. Avoid plastic and wicker within 6 feet of open flames. Stainless steel, stone, and treated hardwood are safe choices. Cushions should be fire-retardant rated for outdoor use.
