Patio Umbrella Size and Base Guide
Sizing Rule
Your umbrella canopy should extend 2 feet beyond the table edge on all sides. A 42-inch table needs a 9-foot umbrella. A 60-inch table needs an 11-foot umbrella.
Standard Sizes
- 6–7 feet: bistro tables, 2-person seating
- 9 feet: standard tables, 4-person
- 10–11 feet: large tables, 6-person
- 13 feet: rectangular tables, 8-person
Base Weight Requirements
The base must weigh at least 10 lbs per foot of canopy diameter. A 9-foot umbrella needs a 90-lb base. Cantilever umbrellas require 150+ lbs due to off-center leverage.
Base Options
- Weighted base (concrete/iron): most stable, hard to move
- Fillable base (sand/water): portable when empty
- Table-mount: pole through table hole, requires heavy table
Fabric and Frame
Choose solution-dyed acrylic (Sunbrella) for fade resistance. Polyester fades within 1–2 seasons. Frame material should match your furniture: aluminum for lightweight, steel for heavy-duty.
