Closet Lighting: Solutions Guide
Why Closet Lighting Matters
Poor closet lighting makes it impossible to distinguish navy from black, find matching shoes, or see the back of deep shelves. Proper lighting transforms a dark closet into a functional dressing room.
LED Strip Lights
The most versatile solution. Battery-operated or plug-in LED strips mount under shelves or along the top of the closet. Motion-sensor versions activate when you open the door. Cost: $15-$40 per strip.
Puck Lights
Small, round LED lights mount under shelves to illuminate specific areas. Battery-operated versions need no wiring. Rechargeable USB versions last 2-3 months per charge. Cost: $20-$50 for a set of 3-6.
Overhead Options
- Flush-mount LED: permanent, bright, requires electrical work
- Pull-chain fixture: simple, code-compliant for closets
- Track lighting: adjustable heads aim light where needed
Color Rendering
Choose bulbs with CRI (Color Rendering Index) of 90+ for accurate color matching. This is critical for distinguishing similar shades. Warm white (3000K) is flattering; daylight (4000K) is more accurate for color matching.
