How to Declutter Before Organizing Any Room

By Emma Davis ·

Why Declutter First

Buying storage bins and shelf organizers before decluttering is like putting a bandage on a broken arm. You need to reduce the volume of stuff first, then organize what remains. Otherwise, you just rearrange clutter into prettier containers.

The Four-Box Method

Label four boxes or bags: Keep, Donate, Trash, and Relocate. Every item in the room goes into one of these four categories. No exceptions, no "maybe" pile.

Keep

Items you use regularly (at least once a month) and that serve a purpose in this specific room.

Donate

Items in good condition that you have not used in 12 months. If it has not been used in a year, it probably will not be used next year either.

Trash

Broken, expired, or worn-out items. Do not donate things that are not in usable condition — that just passes the problem to someone else.

Relocate

Items that belong in a different room. A kitchen tool found in the bedroom closet goes to the Relocate box and gets put away immediately after the session.

Room-by-Room Approach

Do one room at a time. Start with the easiest room (bathroom or entryway) to build momentum. Save the hardest room (garage, attic, or sentimental items) for last when you have built your decision-making muscle.

The 20/20 Rule

If an item costs less than $20 and can be replaced in less than 20 minutes, let it go. This rule eliminates the "what if I need it someday" paralysis for low-value items.

After Decluttering

Wait at least one day before buying any organizational products. Live with the reduced volume first. You will likely find you need fewer bins and shelves than you expected.
