Garage Storage Wall Systems Guide

Getting Tools and Gear Off the Garage Floor

A wall storage system turns your garage from a dumping ground into an organized workspace. The three main systems — slatwall, pegboard, and track — each excel at different types of storage.

Slatwall Panels

Horizontal grooves accept a wide range of hooks, baskets, and shelves. PVC slatwall resists moisture and holds up to 75 lbs per hook. Ideal for bulky items: power tools, sports gear, and garden supplies. Panels install over drywall or directly to studs.

Pegboard

The classic workshop solution. Metal pegboard (steel or aluminum) outperforms Masonite in durability and weight capacity. Standard 1/4-inch holes fit most hook sets. Best for hand tools, small parts, and frequently used items you want visible.

Track-Based Systems

Rails mount horizontally to studs, then accessories hang from the track. Gladiator GearTrack and Rubbermaid FastTrack are popular choices. Easy to reconfigure — slide hooks and bins along the track without unscrewing anything.

Installation Tips

Always mount into studs, not just drywall. Use a stud finder and level. Start with a horizontal rail at 48 inches from the floor, then add panels or accessories above and below.
