Under-Bed Storage Solutions for Small Rooms
Measure Before You Buy
Measure the clearance between the floor and the bottom of your bed frame (or mattress, if platform). Standard bed frames offer 6-12 inches of clearance. You need at least 6 inches for most storage containers.
Rolling Drawer Units
Wooden or fabric rolling drawers slide under the bed and pull out like a dresser drawer. They are ideal for clothing, shoes, and linens. Choose drawers with lids to keep dust out. Two drawers per side of a queen bed add the equivalent of a small dresser.
Vacuum Storage Bags
Compress bulky items (winter coats, comforters, pillows) to 1/4 their original volume. Roll the bag, insert the vacuum hose, and compress. Store flat under the bed. Best for seasonal items you only need twice a year. Replace bags every 2-3 years as seals degrade.
Bed Risers for More Clearance
If your bed frame sits too low, bed risers add 3-8 inches of height. Choose solid wood or heavy-duty plastic risers rated for your bed's total weight (frame + mattress + sleepers). Add risers to all legs evenly to keep the bed level.
Built-In Storage Beds
If you are buying a new bed, consider one with built-in drawers or a hydraulic lift mechanism. Hydraulic beds lift the entire mattress platform to reveal a full-depth storage compartment underneath, essentially giving you a horizontal wardrobe.
What NOT to Store Under the Bed
- Shoes (unless in closed containers): Dust and bed mites
- Paper documents: Moisture and pest risk
- Anything you use daily: Bending down daily becomes annoying; keep daily items in reachable storage
