How to Choose a Nightstand That Fits Your Room
The Golden Rule: Height Match
Your nightstand surface should be level with or slightly below your mattress top. Measure from floor to the top of your mattress (including topper), then shop for nightstands within 2 inches of that height.
Width and Depth Guidelines
Small Bedrooms (Under 120 sq ft)
Choose nightstands 16-20 inches wide. Wall-mounted floating shelves save floor space entirely. Depth should stay under 16 inches to keep walkways clear.
Standard Bedrooms (120-200 sq ft)
20-28 inch wide nightstands work well. You have room for a lamp, phone charger, and a small decorative item on top without overcrowding.
Large Bedrooms (200+ sq ft)
Wider nightstands (28-36 inches) or even small dressers can anchor the bed. Just ensure at least 24 inches of walking space between the nightstand and any adjacent wall or furniture.
Storage Needs Assessment
- Drawer nightstand: Best for hiding chargers, books, medications
- Open shelf: Quick access, visually lighter, shows decor items
- Cabinet door: Conceals clutter, good for tissues and water bottles
Style Matching
Your nightstand does not need to match your bed frame exactly. Aim for complementary finishes and similar design eras. A modern platform bed pairs well with a clean-lined walnut nightstand; a traditional upholstered bed suits a painted or distressed piece.
