Closet Organization for Small Spaces
Assess Your Space
Measure closet width, height, and depth. Standard reach-in closets: 3–8 feet wide, 24 inches deep, 84–96 inches tall. These measurements determine which systems fit.
Double the Hanging Space
Install a second rod below the first. Most people waste 50% vertical space above clothes. A double-rod gives you 48 inches for shirts on top and 42 inches for pants below. Cost: $25–$50.
Vertical Solutions
- Shelf dividers: create 3–4 compartments from one shelf
- Hanging organizers: 6-shelf units for shoes, bags, folded items
- Over-door racks: dead space for accessories
- High shelves: seasonal items in labeled bins
Drawer Alternatives
Clear plastic bins (12-quart) or woven baskets with labels replace drawers. Rolling under-bed containers reclaim 6–10 cubic feet of dead space.
The One-In-One-Out Rule
Small closets cannot accommodate unlimited growth. For every new item, remove one. This prevents the most common failure: capacity overflow.
