How to Layer Bedding for All Seasons
The Art of Year-Round Bedding Layers
Layering bedding properly means you never need to completely swap your bed setup between seasons. A strategic combination of base layers, mid-layers, and top layers adapts to temperature changes effortlessly.
Base Layer: Sheets That Work Year-Round
Percale cotton sheets breathe well in summer and provide a crisp foundation in winter. Avoid flannel sheets as a base — they trap too much heat during warmer months. A 300-400 thread count percale strikes the best balance.
Summer Configuration
- Base: Percale cotton fitted and flat sheet
- Mid: Lightweight linen or cotton blanket
- Top: Optional thin duvet or nothing
Winter Configuration
- Base: Percale cotton sheets
- Mid: Flannel or fleece blanket
- Top: Down or down-alternative duvet (tog 10-13.5)
- Extra: Cashmere throw at foot of bed
Transition Seasons Made Easy
Spring and fall require the most flexibility. Keep a lightweight quilt and a medium-weight blanket within reach. On cooler nights, add the quilt between your sheet and duvet. On warmer nights, drop the duvet entirely.
Pillow Layering Tips
Use a combination of firm sleeping pillows and softer decorative pillows. Euro shams provide back support for reading, while lumbar pillows add visual depth without cluttering the bed.
