Understanding Mattress Firmness Scales

Mattresses are rated on a 1-10 firmness scale. Most people sleep best between 4 and 7, but the ideal range depends on your dominant sleep position and body weight.

Firmness by Sleep Position

Side Sleepers: Soft to Medium (4-6)

Side sleepers need pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. A mattress that is too firm creates pressure points that cause tossing and turning. Look for 2-3 inches of comfort layer over a supportive core.

Back Sleepers: Medium to Medium-Firm (5-7)

Back sleepers need enough firmness to prevent the hips from sinking, which throws the spine out of alignment. A medium-firm mattress with zoned lumbar support works well.

Stomach Sleepers: Firm (7-8)

Stomach sleepers need a firm surface to prevent the midsection from sagging, which strains the lower back. Avoid plush pillow-tops.

Combination Sleepers: Medium (5-6.5)

If you shift between positions, a medium-firm mattress with responsive foam or hybrid construction adapts best.

Body Weight Adjustments

Heavier sleepers (over 230 lbs) should go one firmness level higher. Lighter sleepers (under 130 lbs) should go one level softer to get adequate contouring.
