Buffet Styling Tips: Decorate Your Sideboard
The Buffet as a Design Opportunity
Your dining room buffet or sideboard is prime real estate for styling. It offers a wide surface for layered displays while providing essential storage below. Treat it as your dining room centerpiece.
The Rule of Three
Group decorative items in odd numbers, especially threes. A tall vase, a medium-height candle holder, and a small sculptural object create visual rhythm. Vary heights by at least 3-4 inches between pieces.
Layering Formula
- Back layer: Tall items (lamps, tall vases, artwork leaned against wall)
- Middle layer: Medium items (candle holders, books, medium vases)
- Front layer: Small items (trays, small bowls, seasonal accents)
Artwork Behind the Buffet
Hang artwork or a mirror 6-8 inches above the buffet surface. The piece should be roughly two-thirds the width of the buffet. A large mirror reflects light and makes the dining room feel larger.
Lighting Layers
Add a pair of buffet lamps for ambient lighting during meals. Choose lamps 24-28 inches tall so they are proportional to the surface. Dimmable bulbs let you adjust mood from bright serving light to intimate dining glow.
Seasonal Swaps
Keep a base of neutral, year-round pieces and swap 3-4 seasonal accents. Fresh flowers in spring, driftwood in summer, pumpkins in fall, evergreen branches in winter. This keeps the display fresh without a complete overhaul.
