Arrange Furniture in a Square Living Room
Why Square Rooms Are Tricky
Square living rooms lack a natural focal axis. Without a deliberate layout, furniture ends up pushed against walls, creating a hollow center.
Layout 1: Symmetrical Conversation Area
Place the sofa centered on one wall with two matching armchairs facing it at an angle. Works best in 12x12 to 14x14 rooms.
Layout 2: L-Shaped Sectional with Accent Chair
Push an L-shaped sectional into one corner, then place a single accent chair diagonally opposite. This maximizes seating in rooms under 14 feet square.
Layout 3: Floating Furniture Zones
In rooms 15x15 or larger, pull furniture away from walls. Create two zones: a conversation area on a large rug and a secondary zone for reading or a desk.
Layout 4: TV-Centered Arrangement
Mount the TV on one wall and arrange seating in a U-shape. Keep the sofa 8 to 10 feet from the screen for a 55 to 65-inch TV.
Traffic Flow Rules
- Maintain 30 to 36 inch walkways between furniture groups
- Never block the path from the entry door to the main seating area
- Keep 18 inches between coffee table and sofa
