The Front-Legs Rule

At minimum, the front legs of every seating piece should rest on the rug. This anchors the furniture grouping visually.

Standard Sofa (84 inches)

An 8x10 foot rug fits most living rooms with a standard three-seat sofa. Place the sofa so its front legs sit 12-18 inches from the rug edge.

Sectional Sofa

A 9x12 foot rug accommodates most sectionals. Ensure the rug extends at least 6 inches beyond each end.

Small Rooms

• 5x7 rug under a loveseat with two accent chairs
• 4x6 rug as an accent layer over wall-to-wall carpet

Material Tips

Wool rugs resist stains and last decades. Jute adds texture but sheds. Polypropylene is budget-friendly and easy to clean in high-traffic homes.
