Coffee Table Height and Clearance Rules
The Perfect Coffee Table Height
The top of your coffee table should be 1-2 inches below or level with the top of your sofa seat cushions. Standard sofa seat heights are 17-19 inches, so most coffee tables at 16-18 inches work perfectly.
Clearance Distances
- Sofa to coffee table: 14-18 inches. Close enough to reach your drink, far enough to stretch your legs.
- Coffee table to TV stand: At least 24 inches of walkway.
- Around the table: 30 inches minimum on all sides for comfortable traffic flow.
Sizing by Sofa Width
Your coffee table should be about two-thirds the length of your sofa. A 90-inch sofa pairs with a 60-inch table. For sectionals, measure the longest continuous seating section.
Shape Considerations
Rectangular tables suit long sofas. Round or oval tables work better in tight spaces where sharp corners are a hazard. Square tables pair well with L-shaped sectionals, positioned in the corner nook.
