Coffee Table Height and Proportion Guide

Coffee Table Height and Proportion Guide

By James Thornton ·

The 18-Inch Rule

Your coffee table should be 1–2 inches lower than your sofa seat height. Standard sofa seats are 17–19 inches, making 16–18 inches the ideal table height. Tables too tall create visual barriers; too low makes reaching awkward.

Length and Width

A coffee table should be approximately two-thirds the sofa length. For an 84-inch sofa, aim for a 54–60 inch table. Leave 14–18 inches between table and sofa for leg room.

Shape Guide

Rectangular

Best for standard sofas. Maximum surface area. Works well in rectangular rooms.

Round or Oval

Ideal for sectionals and tight spaces. No sharp corners. 36–42 inch diameter suits most arrangements.

Square

Pairs well with square rooms. Two square tables together create flexibility.

Material and Function

Glass tops make small rooms feel larger. Wood is warm and forgiving. Stone makes a statement but weighs 100+ pounds. For families, distressed wood or metal with lacquered top offers the best durability.
