Coffee Table Height: What Actually Works
The Golden Rule
Your coffee table should be the same height as your sofa seat cushions, or 1-2 inches lower. For most standard sofas, this means a coffee table height of 16-18 inches from the floor.
Why Height Matters
A table that is too high blocks sightlines when you are seated and makes it awkward to reach for drinks. A table that is too low forces you to lean forward uncomfortably and can look disconnected from the seating.
Measuring Your Sofa
Measure from the floor to the top of the seat cushion (not the back cushion). That measurement, minus 0-2 inches, is your ideal coffee table height. Modern low-profile sofas often have seat heights of 15-16 inches, calling for shorter tables.
Height by Sofa Style
- Traditional sofa (18-inch seat height): 16-18 inch table
- Mid-century modern (16-inch seat height): 14-16 inch table
- Low-profile/Italian style (14-inch seat height): 12-14 inch table
- Sectional with deep seats (17-19 inch seat height): 16-18 inch table
Distance from Sofa
Place the coffee table 14-18 inches from the front edge of the sofa. This is close enough to reach comfortably but far enough to walk past without bumping your shins.
Shape and Size
The table should be about two-thirds the length of the sofa. For an 84-inch sofa, aim for a 56-inch table. Round or oval tables work well in tight spaces because they eliminate sharp corners. Rectangular tables suit longer sofas.
Lift-Top and Storage Tables
Lift-top coffee tables raise to dining or desk height (26-30 inches) when needed. They are practical in small apartments where a separate dining table is not possible. Make sure the lift mechanism is sturdy and does not wobble.
