Sectional vs Sofa: Which Fits Your Room?
The Space Equation
Sectionals dominate a room—typically 95–130 inches along one wall and 65–90 on the return. Sofas average 72–96 inches. Your room size should drive this decision before aesthetics.
Minimum Room Sizes
- Sectional: 15 × 20 feet or larger to maintain walkways
- Standard sofa: works in rooms as small as 12 × 14 feet
- Loveseat + accent chairs: most flexible for rooms under 12 × 14 feet
Seating Capacity
A sectional seats 5–7 people. A standard sofa seats 3. If you regularly host 4+ guests, a sectional eliminates extra chairs. If gatherings are usually 2–3 people, a sofa with one accent chair provides better conversation geometry.
Cost Reality
Sectionals cost $1,200–$5,000. Sofas run $800–$3,000 but you may add accent chairs ($300–$800 each). Total cost is often similar—the difference is in footprint and flexibility.
Our Rule of Thumb
If your living room is under 200 square feet, choose a sofa. Over 250 square feet, a sectional fills the space better and creates a defined seating area.
