Living Room Lighting: Layer Ambient, Task, Accent
The Three Layers of Living Room Lighting
A well-lit living room uses three types of light. Ambient light provides overall illumination, task light focuses on activities, and accent light highlights features.
Ambient Lighting: Your Base Layer
- Recessed ceiling lights (4 to 6 fixtures, spaced 4 feet apart)
- A central pendant or chandelier (7 feet above floor minimum)
- Cove lighting or LED strips along crown molding
Choose warm white bulbs (2700K to 3000K) for ambient lighting. Cool white feels clinical in living spaces.
Task Lighting: Focus Where You Need It
- Floor lamps next to sofas and reading chairs
- Table lamps on console tables behind the sofa
- Desk lamps if the room doubles as a workspace
Task lights should be 2 to 3 times brighter than ambient. Look for 450 to 800 lumens per fixture.
Accent Lighting: Add Depth
Use picture lights above paintings, LED strips inside shelving, or directional spotlights on textured walls. Accent lights should be one-third the brightness of task lights.
Dimmers and Smart Controls
Install dimmer switches on the ambient layer. Smart bulbs let you adjust color temperature throughout the day: cooler during work hours, warmer in the evening.
