TV Stand Height: What Works for Your Screen

The Eye-Level Rule

The center of your TV screen should sit at eye level when seated. For most sofas, that is about 42 inches from the floor. For a 55-inch TV, the stand surface should be roughly 28 to 30 inches high.

Stand Height by TV Size

Width: How Wide Should the Stand Be?

Your stand should be at least 3 inches wider than the TV on each side. A 55-inch TV is roughly 48 inches wide, so look for a stand that is 54 inches or wider.

Storage and Cable Management

Modern TV stands should include cable routing holes. Look for adjustable interior shelves for gaming consoles and streaming boxes. Open-back designs improve ventilation.

Material and Weight Capacity

Solid wood and engineered wood with metal frames support the heaviest TVs. A 65-inch TV can weigh 50 to 70 pounds. Check the stand weight rating before buying.
