TV Wall Mounting Height Guide
The Eye-Level Rule
The center of your TV screen should be at eye level when seated. For most sofas, that means the center is approximately 42 inches from the floor.
Calculating Your Ideal Height
The Formula
TV center height = seating eye height (usually 36-42 inches). For a 55-inch TV (about 27 inches tall), the bottom of the TV would be at roughly 42 - 13.5 = 28.5 inches from the floor.
Adjustments for Room Type
- Living room (seated viewing): Center at 42 inches
- Bedroom (lying down): Center at 48-52 inches, tilted down
- Kitchen/bar (standing): Center at 52-56 inches
Viewing Distance
For 4K TVs, the ideal distance is 1-1.5 times the screen diagonal. A 65-inch TV should be viewed from 5.5-8 feet away.
Mounting Tips
Always locate studs before mounting. Use a stud finder, not guesswork. For drywall without stud access, use toggle bolts rated for at least 4x the TV weight. Leave 2-3 inches of clearance from the wall for ventilation.
