Home Office Lighting: The Full Setup

Home Office Lighting: The Full Setup

Lighting Affects Everything

Poor office lighting causes eye strain, headaches, and afternoon fatigue. Most home offices rely on a single overhead fixture, which creates harsh shadows on screens and insufficient task illumination. A proper setup uses three layers of light.

Layer 1: Ambient Light

This is your general room illumination. Aim for 300-500 lux across the room. Use indirect lighting — bounce light off the ceiling with an uplight or use a fixture with a diffuser to eliminate harsh glare.

Layer 2: Task Light

A dedicated desk lamp provides focused light for reading documents and writing. Position it on the opposite side of your mouse hand to avoid shadows. LED desk lamps with adjustable color temperature let you shift from warm evening light to cool morning focus.

Layer 3: Screen Bias Light

Place an LED strip behind your monitor. This reduces the contrast between the bright screen and dark surroundings, dramatically reducing eye strain during long work sessions.

Color Temperature Strategy

Use cool white (4000-5000K) during morning and early afternoon for alertness. Switch to warm white (2700-3000K) after 4pm to support your circadian rhythm and evening wind-down.
