Best Outdoor Cushions for Rain and Sun (2026)
Fabric Comparison
Sunbrella (Acrylic)
The industry standard for outdoor fabrics. Sunbrella is solution-dyed (color goes all the way through the fiber), making it fade-resistant for 5+ years in direct sun. It is water-resistant but not waterproof, so cushions should be stored or covered during heavy rain. Cleanable with bleach solution for stubborn stains.
Olefin (Polypropylene)
Olefin is increasingly popular as a Sunbrella alternative at 40-60% lower cost. It resists UV fading, dries quickly, and resists mold and mildew. The texture is slightly rougher than Sunbrella but most people cannot tell the difference. Expect 3-5 years of outdoor life.
Polyester (Budget)
Standard polyester cushions fade within 1-2 seasons in direct sun. They are fine for covered patios or seasonal use but will not survive year-round outdoor exposure. Look for polyester with a UV-inhibitor coating for slightly better performance.
Foam Filling Matters
- Open-cell foam: Absorbs water, takes days to dry, mold risk. Avoid for outdoor use.
- Closed-cell foam: Water-resistant, dries quickly, maintains shape. Best for uncovered furniture.
- Quick-dry foam: Open-cell foam with large pores that drain water rapidly. Good compromise of comfort and drainage.
Maintenance Tips
Brush off debris weekly. Spot-clean spills immediately. Store cushions in a deck box or bring them indoors during winter. Even the best fabric degrades faster under constant moisture and freezing temperatures.
