Fire Pit Seating: How to Arrange It Right

Fire Pit Seating: How to Arrange It Right

By David Armstrong ·

Safety Distance First

All seating should be at least 3 feet from the fire pit edge. This prevents heat discomfort, protects clothing from sparks, and allows people to walk behind seated guests.

Seating by Fire Pit Type

Round Fire Pit (30-44 inches)

Arrange chairs in a circle, 4-5 feet from the center. This puts sitters 2-3 feet from the flame edge — close enough for warmth, far enough for safety. A 44-inch pit comfortably seats 4-6 people around it.

Square/Rectangular Fire Pit

Arrange seating in a U or L shape around the pit. The open side serves as the entry/exit point. Works well against a wall or fence where one side is already enclosed.

Built-In Fire Pit Wall

A low wall (18-24 inches) around one side of the fire pit doubles as seating. Add outdoor cushions for comfort. Supplement with 2-3 chairs on the open sides.

Chair Types for Fire Pits

Adirondack Chairs

The classic fire pit chair. Deep seat, high back, wide arms (perfect for drinks). Low to the ground — great for warmth but harder to get out of. Allow 30 inches width per chair.

Deep-Seating Patio Chairs

Cushioned outdoor armchairs with a higher seat. More comfortable for extended sitting and easier to get out of. Need more space — 36 inches per chair.

Built-In Bench Seating

Permanent stone or wood benches around the pit. Most space-efficient option. Add weather-resistant cushions for comfort. Allow 24 inches per person.

Layout Tips

Lighting the Seating Area

The fire provides ambient light but you'll want supplemental lighting for paths and safety. String lights overhead or pathway solar lights around the perimeter create a safe, inviting atmosphere.
