Outdoor Cushion Fabric Comparison (2026)
Why Fabric Choice Determines Cushion Lifespan
Outdoor cushions face UV radiation, rain, mildew, and temperature swings. The fabric you choose determines whether your cushions last one season or ten.
Sunbrella (Solution-Dyed Acrylic)
The gold standard. Color is embedded throughout the fiber (not surface-dyed), so it resists fading for 5+ years even in direct sun. Water-repellent, mildew-resistant, and bleach-cleanable. Price: $30-60 per yard.
Olefin (Polypropylene)
Budget-friendly alternative with good UV and stain resistance. Less soft than Sunbrella but dries faster after rain. Often used in mid-range outdoor furniture. Price: $10-25 per yard.
Polyester (Standard or Coated)
The cheapest option. Standard polyester fades within 1-2 seasons. Coated versions (with UV inhibitors) last longer but still underperform acrylic. Price: $5-15 per yard. Best for covered patios only.
Cleaning and Maintenance
- Sunbrella: Hose off or machine wash. Spot-clean with bleach solution for stubborn stains.
- Olefin: Wipe with mild detergent. Avoid bleach — it can weaken fibers.
- Polyester: Hand wash only. Apply fabric protector spray annually.
