Outdoor Furniture Winter Storage Tips
Pre-Winter Cleaning
Before storing, clean every piece thoroughly. Dirt and organic matter trap moisture, which causes mold and corrosion over winter.
Wood Furniture
Wash with mild soap and water. Let dry completely. Apply a fresh coat of teak oil or sealant to prevent cracking.
Metal Furniture
Remove rust spots with steel wool. Apply touch-up paint to any chips. Coat aluminum with car wax for extra protection.
Wicker and Rattan
Vacuum crevices. Wipe with damp cloth. Synthetic wicker can stay outdoors; natural rattan must come inside.
Storage Options
Indoor Storage (Best)
Garage, shed, or basement. Stack chairs to save space. Keep furniture off concrete floors (use pallets) to prevent moisture absorption.
Covers (Good Alternative)
Use breathable, waterproof covers — not plastic tarps, which trap condensation. Secure covers with bungee cords, not rope (allows airflow).
Leave Out (Risky)
Only powder-coated aluminum and synthetic wicker can safely winter outdoors. Even then, cover cushions and remove fabric accessories.
Cushion Care
Always bring cushions indoors. Machine wash covers if removable. Store in a dry, ventilated area — not sealed plastic bags (trapped moisture causes mildew).
